Benzoyl peroxide gel
- Nov 29, 2018 -

The mechanism of action of benzoyl peroxide is not fully understood, but it is believed to be mainly due to its ability to sterilize P. acnes. In addition, patients treated with benzoyl peroxide showed reduced lipid and free fatty acids and mild desquamation (drying and peeling), while acne and acne lesions were reduced. Although benzoyl peroxide is known to be metabolized to benzoic acid by skin absorption and then excreted as benzoate from the urine, little is known about transdermal absorption, metabolism and excretion of benzoyl peroxide.
